(2/25, Seaman) reported that according to a study
published online Feb. 13 in the Archives of Internal Medicine, the use
of sodium phosphate enemas for the relief of constipation may cause
acute kidney failure and even death in elderly people. In 11 seniors
ages 61 to 89, use of the enemas resulted in acute kidney failure. Of
the 11, five died and six required a lengthy hospital stay to recover
from
elevated blood phosphate levels, hypotension and low levels of calcium.
