Everolimus May Help Treat Kidney Complications Of Tuberous Sclerosis.
HealthDay (1/11, Esposito) reports, "Too often, patients with a relatively rare genetic disorder called tuberous sclerosis undergo unnecessary surgical removal of a kidney." Now, however, "an international study published Jan. 10 in The Lancet found that the drug everolimus (Afinitor) was successful in treating kidney complications in some cases of tuberous sclerosis or a related condition." Of the 98 patients who finished the randomized study, "42 percent had their tumors reduced by at least half," whereas none of the patients on placebo had such a response.
