(1/6, Neal) reports, "All hospital patients should have blood glucose
levels measured on admission, according to an Endocrine Society clinical
practice
guideline

on managing hyperglycemia in non-critically ill patients" to appear in
the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. "For most
patients with type 2 diabetes, the authors suggest discontinuation of
oral hypoglycemic agents and initiation of insulin therapy on admission
for an acute illness." This
recommendation "applies to both diabetic and normoglycemic patients, and
goes one step further than guidance from the American Diabetes
Association (ADA)," which "has recommended initial glucose measurements
for diabetic patients and nondiabetic patients who are receiving
therapies associated with hyperglycemia, with the recognition that high
blood glucose has been associated with a greater risk for complications
and death among hospitalized patients."
