WebMD (9/20, Mann) reports, "A blend of sesame and rice bran oil, or making low-fat yogurt a small part of your diet, may help your blood pressure and boost heart health, according to two new studies" presented at the American Heart Association's High Blood Pressure Research 2012 meeting.
HealthDay (9/20, Mozes) reports that one of the studies, "conducted in New Delhi, India, found that hypertensive adults who added roughly 1.25 ounces of a rice bran/sesame oil mixture to their daily diet experienced a drop in blood pressure nearly equivalent to that experienced by those taking a standard calcium-channel blocker blood pressure medication alone." Researchers reported that those "who consumed both the oil mixture and their blood pressure medication saw a blood pressure drop more than twice that of those taking the drug alone." Additionally, "the oil combination...seemed to lower so-called 'bad' (LDL) cholesterol and raise 'good' (HDL) cholesterol."
MedPage Today (9/20, Phend) reports that in the other study, researchers found that "people who ate at least the equivalent of one serving" of yogurt "every three days were 31% less likely to develop high blood pressure than those who ate no yogurt at all." The investigators reported that "an even stronger effect was seen among individuals who were not taking antihypertensive drugs." The Daily Telegraph (UK) (9/20, Adams) also covers the story.
