Biomarkers Linked with Uremia in Dialysis Patients
Uremia is linked with endothelial damage and aberrations in platelet granules in patients undergoing hemodialysis in a recent BMC Nephrology study. The investigators detected increased blood concentrations of proendothelin in patients compared with healthy controls. The authors speculate that such increased concentrations reflect ongoing stress on endothelial cells due to uremia. Biomarkers like proendothelin and aberrations in platelet granules may help in the early detection of procoagulant activity of the endothelium.
