HealthDay
(6/5, Dallas) reports that a new study published in the June issue of
Mayo Clinic Proceedings finds that "people with a certain flaw in their
immune system are up to four times more likely to die than people who
don't have this 'glitch.'" The researchers "explained that people whose
immune system produced too much of an antibody molecule known as a free
light chain, are far more likely to die from a serious illness, such as
cancer, diabetes or heart disease."
The CNN
(6/5, Gardner) "The Chart" blog explains that the researches "measured
levels of the immune-system molecules known as free light chains in
15,859 Minnesotans age 50 and up, and found that people whose levels
were in the top 10% were four times more likely than the other study
participants to die over the next 13 years."
