Reuters (6/18) reports that, according to a study
published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism,
vitamin D and calcium supplements may help older individuals live longer
lives than those who do not use the supplements.
MSNBC
/MyHealthNewsDaily (6/18, Matthews) reports that investigators "looked
at data regarding the vitamin D intake of more than 70,000 adults in
their 60s and 70s."
HealthDay
(6/16, Reinberg) reported that "the investigators found that, over
three years, vitamin D alone did not reduce the risk of death
(mortality), but when taken with calcium mortality was reduced 9
percent."
WebMD
(6/16, Boyles) reported, "The reason for the lower death rate isn't
clear. But it didn't appear to be about a reduction in fractures, which
is one main indication for taking calcium and vitamin D."
