LVAD May Help Reverse Renal Dysfunction.
MedPage Today
(12/20, Ullman) reports, "Renal dysfunction in patients being
considered for implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD)
is largely reversible, according to the results
of a recent retrospective single-center analysis" published in the
Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Investigators found that
"glomerular filtration rate (GFR) increased from admission (53.2 ± 21.4
ml/min/1.73 m2) to 1 month after the left ventricular assist device was
implanted
(87.4 ± 27.9 ml/min/1.73 m2, P<0.0001)." The researchers reported
that, "at three and six months, GFR remained significantly above what
was seen prior to implantation (P< 0.0001)."
