Meta-Analysis Examines Pregnancy Outcomes After Kidney Transplant
The Cleveland (OH) Plain Dealer (12/6, Townsend) reports that according to a meta-analysis published in the November issue of the American Journal of Transplantation, "pregnancy following a [kidney] transplant usually is safe," but "preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, cesarean section and preterm delivery all occurred at rates higher than the general US population." Researchers arrived at these conclusions after reviewing 50 studies from 25 different countries. An editorial accompanying the meta-analysis suggested that "even with proof of successful pregnancies over the past decades, transplant recipients and their families still need information to help them assess the risks, and counseling if they choose to proceed."
