Risk Of Death For Live Liver Donors "Relatively Low."
HealthDay
(1/31, Dallas) reports, "People who donate a piece of their liver to
someone in need of a transplant can still live a long and healthy life,"
according to a study published in the February issue of the journal
Gastroenterology. For the study, "researchers analyzed information on
more than 4,000 live liver donors in the United States between April
1994 and March 2011 and followed them for roughly eight years."
Notably, "seven donor deaths occurred in the 90 days following surgery."
However, even though it is "'relatively
low,' the risk of death for live liver donors is still five times higher
than the risk for kidney donors," the study authors said.
