The Los Angeles Times
(4/10, Mestel) "Booster Shots" reports, "Omega-3 fatty acids don't
help people with preexisting heart disease avoid future cardiovascular
trouble," according to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
HealthDay
(4/10, Doheny) reports that investigators analyzed data from "14
studies that had been published in the medical literature." Altogether,
"the studies looked at more than 20,000 patients who had a history of
cardiovascular disease."
MedPage Today
(4/10, Bankhead) reports that the "data...showed a relative risk of
0.99 for patients treated with omega-3 supplements, virtually identical
to the risk in the placebo groups." The researchers reported that "a
small reduction in cardiovascular death disappeared after exclusion of a
trial that had major methodologic problems."
