MedPage Today Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (4/5, Walsh) reports, "Patients with Clostridium difficile infection and underlying impaired renal function who were treated with fidaxomicin fared better than those given vancomycin," according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the Society of Hospital Medicine. "Patients with toxin-positive C. difficile infection and creatinine clearance below normal (90 mL/min/1.73 m2) were half as likely to experience a recurrence of diarrhea if treated with fidaxomicin (OR 0.46, 95% CI 0.32 to 0.66, P<0.001)," researchers reported. What's more, "patients with moderate to severe renal impairment who received fidaxomicin (Dificid) had almost twice the likelihood of experiencing a four-week sustained response compared with those given vancomycin (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.41 to 2.53, P<0.001)," the study found.
