Study Suggests Compounds In Coffee Could Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes.
HealthDay
(1/20, Gordon) reports a Chinese study of cell cultures published in
the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that coffee could
help "stave off type 2 diabetes." Researchers found that caffeic acid,
chlorogenic acid, and caffeine, "three major compounds in coffee...may
provide potentially beneficial effects" by inhibiting "the production of
the abnormal protein deposits associated" with Human islet amyloid
polypeptide in people with type 2 diabetes. Dr. Vivian Fonseca,
president of medicine and science at the
American Diabetes Association, said, "Scientifically, this is a very
nice paper, but it has its limitations," as it wasn't done in animals or
people.
