Fructose Intake Associated With Liver Damage In Obese Patients With Diabetes.

MedPage Today Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (9/21, Smith) reports, "In obese patients with diabetes, a high intake of fructose – a sugar widely used in soft drinks and other foods – is associated with impairment in cellular energy balance that may play a role in liver disease," according to astudy Share to FacebookShare to Twitter published in the Sept. Issue of the journal Hepatology. The 244-participant "study also suggested that elevated uric acid levels in response to a fructose challenge might be a marker for energy depletion," researchers reported. "The findings suggest that energy depletion in the liver might be a factor in the development and progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)," the study authors concluded. The study was partly supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders.
