Everolimus May Help Treat Kidney Complications Of Tuberous Sclerosis.

HealthDay Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (1/11, Esposito) reports, "Too often, patients with a relatively rare genetic disorder called tuberous sclerosis undergo unnecessary surgical removal of a kidney." Now, however, "an international study Share to FacebookShare to Twitter published Jan. 10 in The Lancet found that the drug everolimus (Afinitor) was successful in treating kidney complications in some cases of tuberous sclerosis or a related condition." Of the 98 patients who finished the randomized study, "42 percent had their tumors reduced by at least half," whereas none of the patients on placebo had such a response.
