Tacrolimus Trumps Cyclophosphamide In Treating Nephrotic Syndrome In Kids.
MedPage Today (11/15, Neale) reports that according to a study presented at the American Society of Nephrology's annual meeting, "tacrolimus (Prograf) was better than cyclophosphamide at inducing and sustaining remission of proteinuria in pediatric patients with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome." In a study "conducted at five Indian centers in 131 children ages two to 16 who had idiopathic steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome with minimal change disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, or mesangial proliferation on biopsy," researchers found that "after six months of treatment, tacrolimus resulted in a 36.6% absolute increase in the rate of complete or partial remission (82.5% versus 45.9%, P<0.001)." What's more, "tacrolimus also carried less risk of treatment failure and serious infection."
