Pomegranate Juice May Improve CV Risk Profile In Hemodialysis Patients.

MedPage Today Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (11/16, Bankhead) reports, "Hemodialysis patients had significant improvement in their cardiovascular (CV) risk profile after consuming 10 ounces of pomegranate juice weekly for a year," according to research presented at the American Society of Nephrology's annual meeting. Among 101 hemodialysis patients, "triglyceride levels and systolic blood pressure declined significantly from baseline (P=0.01 and P=0.006, respectively) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) increased significantly (P=0.005). Additionally, consumption of pomegranate juice on a regular basis was associated with a 22.2% reduction in use of antihypertensive medications (P=0.05)." Patients who received placebo "had no significant changes in any of the parameters."
