Four new guidelines released by the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association address cardiovascular disease prevention. The guidelines state that statins have the strongest evidence of a favorable risk-benefit ratio. A new risk equation can be used to determine whether patients with diabetes and elevated LDL cholesterol levels should receive high-intensity or moderate-intensity statin therapies. The guidelines also address lifestyle and obesity/overweight management.
