Healthy Diet, Moderate Alcohol Linked to Reduced Risk of CKD and Premature Death Among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Among 6213 patients with type 2 diabetes in a JAMA Internal Medicine study, those with the healthiest diets were less likely to develop CKD or to die within 5.5 years. Patients who ate more than three servings of fruits per week had a lower risk of CKD, as did patients with the highest intake of total and animal protein. Sodium intake was not associated with CKD, while moderate alcohol intake reduced the risk of CKD and mortality. The findings suggest that individuals with diabetes and vascular disease should maintain a healthy diet, avoiding extremes of protein and salt intake.
