Higher BMI Linked to Longer Survival in Adults with Diabetes

In a study of almost 75,000 adults who were followed for 6 years, death rates were substantially higher among participants with diabetes compared with those without diabetes across all BMI quintiles, but mortality increased with increasing BMI in those without diabetes, while it decreased with increasing BMI among those with diabetes. The results of the Journal of General Internal Medicine study suggest that weight may have a different impact on mortality for diabetics than for the general population. The findings also indicate that diabetes status should be taken into account in population studies that link weight and mortality.
