Colloid and Crystalloid Use for Fluid Resuscitation Leads to Similar 28-day Mortality in Patients with Hypovolemia

Among ICU patients with hypovolemia, the use of colloids compared with crystalloids did not result in a significant difference in 28-day mortality in a JAMA study. The trial included 2857 ICU patients in several countries who required fluid resuscitation for sepsis, trauma, or hypovolemic shock without sepsis or trauma. Patients were randomly assigned to crystalloids or colloids throughout their ICU stay. While there was no difference in outcomes at 28 days, 90-day mortality was lower among patients receiving colloids (30.7% vs. 34.2%). However, the authors say the 90-day findings should be considered exploratory and require further study.
