Study Shows Benefits of Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Placement with Omentum Management

Among 67 peritoneal dialysis patients receiving regular open insertion (ROI) or open insertion with omentum folding (OIOF) at the time of primary open catheter placement, 27.3% of ROI patients presented with catheter malposition after 60 days vs. 5.9% of OIOF patients. Irreversible catheter dysfunction occurred in 15.2% of ROI patients vs. none of OIOF patients. No difference was seen in other complications or patient survival. A review of publications from 1990 to 2013 suggested that catheter placement with omentum management could lead to less irreversible catheter dysfunction and improved outcome of catheter survival, according to the Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation study.
