Vitamin D Insufficiency Common and Linked with Kidney Function in CKD Patients

A study that examined the relationship between vitamin D status and the staging of CKD in 2895 Thai patients found that average 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were significantly lower according to severity of renal impairment. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency for CKD stage 3a, 3b, 4, and 5 were 66.6%, 70.9%, 74.6%, and 84.7%. After adjustments, patients with vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency (30 ng/mL or less) were more than twice as likely to develop ESRD. Those with vitamin D deficiency (less than 10 ng/mL) were more than 16 times as likely to develop ESRD. The findings are published in BMC Nephrology.
