Hip Fracture Rates Down Among Hemodialysis Patients

Among Medicare beneficiaries aged 66 years and older, the adjusted hip fracture rate among hemodialysis patients increased from 23.4 events per 1000 person-years in 1993 to a high of 41.4 events in 2004; then it decreased to 31.9 events by 2010. Changes in the management of mineral bone disease in CKD patients may partially explain the trend. Only slight changes were seen in Medicare non-ESRD patients. The hip fracture rate rose from 9.6 to 10.6 events per 1000 person-years from 1993 to 1996 and then decreased to 8.0 events by 2010, according to the American Journal of Kidney Diseases study.
