Obesity Does Not Offer Survival Benefits in Diabetic Dialysis Patients

In a study that examined the effect of obesity on the risk of premature death among 98 maintenance hemodialysis patients with diabetes who were followed for a median of 33 months, mortality rates (per 100 person-years) were: 3.4 for nondiabetic obese, 8.6 for nondiabetic nonobese, 14.3 for diabetic nonobese, and 18.1 for diabetic obese patients. After adjusting for adipokines, a greater effect modification by diabetes was observed, while adjusting for inflammatory markers did not influence the effect modification.
