Certain Contraceptives Linked to Increased Diabetes Risk in Obese Women.

Healthy, obese, reproductive-age women who used long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) containing progestin had a slightly increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes compared with those who used nonhormonal contraception in a 6-month Contraceptionstudy of 25 obese women: eight using nonhormonal birth control methods, eight using a progestin-releasing LARC device implanted in the uterus (IUD), and nine using a progestin-releasing LARC device implanted under the skin. There was a 10% increase in fasting blood-glucose levels among the skin implant users, compared with a 5% increase among the IUD users and a 2% decrease among those using nonhormonal methods.
