Cytomegalovirus Linked with Heart Disease in Kidney Transplant Recipients.

Pretransplant cytomegalovirus (CMV) exposure and post-transplant CMV replication were linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in kidney transplant recipients in a 570-patient Journal of Infectious Diseases study. CMV exposure before transplantation was independently linked with an 80% increased risk for atherosclerotic events. During an average follow-up of 87 months, patients who experienced CMV replication post-transplantation had a 2-fold increased risk of atherosclerotic events and a 76% increased risk of death compared with CMV-negative recipients.
