Women's Calcium Intake Linked with Risk of Cardiovascular Death.

Women taking calcium supplements and consuming more than 1400 mg/day of dietary calcium were more than twice as likely to die during a 19-year study than women with a 600 to 999 mg/day calcium intake. Higher death rates were due to all causes and cardiovascular disease but not from stroke. The BMJ study included more than 61,000 middle-aged or older Swedish women. The findings suggest that boosting calcium levels should be considered only for people with a low intake of calcium rather than for those already consuming satisfactory amounts.
