Drug Protects Against Kidney Injury from Imaging Dye.

In patients with acute coronary syndrome who were undergoing coronary procedures, high doses of rosuvastatin significantly reduced the rate of acute kidney injury (AKI) caused by iodixanol dye used in imaging, according to research presented at the American College of Cardiology's Scientific Session. The study involved 504 patients assigned to receive rosuvastatin upon admission, during their hospital stay, and after discharge or to receive atorvastatin only after discharge. Contrast-induced AKI occurred in 6.7% of patients in the rosuvastatin group and 15.1% in the control group. Fewer patients taking rosuvastatin experienced creatinine increases of at least 0.3 mg/dL within 72 hours.
