Donor Kidney Volume Predicts Kidney Function after Transplantation.

Patients who receive kidneys from people with relatively large kidney volumes-as determined by abdominal CT scans-have higher eGFRs up to 5 years posttransplant than recipients of relatively small kidneys, report researchers at the 13th Annual American Society of Transplant Surgeons' State of the Art Winter Symposium. Recipients also have higher eGFRs when the donors have relatively large trunk muscles. For the study, investigators reviewed CT images and donation outcomes from 302 people who donated kidney between 2000 and 2008. The study's findings were reported by Renal & Urology News.
