World Kidney Day 2013 Focuses on Acute Kidney Injury.

Today is World Kidney Day, and this year's theme is AKI. ASN and other global organizations are raising awareness about this serious and growing health threat by promoting discussion, education, and policy development to improve prevention and treatment of AKI. Patients with AKI have a higher short-term risk of in-hospital death and survivors face an increased risk of developing CKD and ESRD. ASN is observing World Kidney Day by conducting a US member survey to provide a 1-day snapshot of AKI incidence. The National Institutes of Health is also raising awareness of the long-term effects of AKI for World Kidney Day.
