Depression and Anxiety Affect Quality of Life of Predialysis Patients.

Early detection of depression and anxiety and interventions to treat them should be considered to improve the quality of life of predialysis patients. An International Journal of Clinical Practice study of 208 predialysis patients found the prevalence of depression (47.1%) and anxiety (27.6%) did not differ across CKD stages. Depression correlated positively with age, employment, income, education, comorbidity index, hemoglobin level, albumin concentration, and anxiety score, and negatively with quality-of-life scores. Anxiety correlated significantly with quality of life, but not with socioeconomic factors. After adjusting for confounding factors, depression and anxiety independently correlated with quality of life.
