Reduced Calorie Intake Explains Improved Diabetes Control after Weight Loss Surgery.

Type 2 diabetics who follow the same strict dietary regimen that patients adhere to after bariatric surgery are just as likely to reduce their blood glucose levels as those who undergo the surgery. Investigators followed 10 patients in an inpatient setting who were initially treated with a standard post-surgery diet; patients then underwent the surgery several months later. Fasting blood glucose levels dropped 21% during the diet-only phase and 12% after combining the diet with surgery, according to the Diabetes Care study. Blood glucose levels after a standard meal decreased by 15% in the diet-only phase and 18% after surgery.
