Some Weight-Loss Methods May Be Dangerous For Certain CKD Patients.

HealthDay Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (2/25, Preidt) reported, "Overweight or obese people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) may suffer further kidney damage if they use certain weight-loss methods," according to a study published online in the International Journal of Obesity. In some 11,000 overweight or obese adults, researchers found that 50% of those with CKD "said they had tried to lose weight in the past year, and eight percent said they used medications as part of their weight-loss program. Some also used weight-loss methods that promoted high-protein diets that called for up to 1.9 grams per kilogram of body weight per day." Notably, "weight-loss medications and high-protein diets are not recommended for people with chronic kidney disease because these methods may lead to further kidney damage," the study authors found.
